Pontifical Biblical Institute

Biblical Studies

The purpose of the Biblical Faculty is:

  • To cultivate and promote, by means of scholarly research, the obtaining of "a more profound understanding and exposition of the meaning of Sacred Scripture." (Dei Verbum , §12)
  • To offer to the students, by the teaching and practice of various disciplines, in particular the biblical languages, an adequate preparation both for scholarly research and for the teaching and spread of Sacred Scripture and of the disciplines connected with it.
  • To work toward "a better understanding and explanation of the meaning of Sacred Scripture, so that through preparatory study the judgment of the Church may mature" (Dei Verbum, §12) and that Sacred Scripture may have an ever more active role in the study of theology, in pastoral ministry, in ecumenical dialogue, in the sacred liturgy and in the reading of the faithful.

The annual offering of courses in the Faculty of Eastern Christian Studies is distributed as follows:

  • courses common to all sections, compulsory for all students enrolled in the Licentiate, aiming at a comprehensive presentation of the Christian East;
  • principal section courses, compulsory for students enrolled in the section (and optional for students enrolled in the other sections), which deal with the fundamental elements of the disciplines of the section;
  • auxiliary section courses, optional for all students, which delve into minor areas or particular issues and periods of the section;
  • section seminars, which can accommodate a maximum of eight students and allow for the exercise of scientific research methodology in practice;
  • courses in ancient and modern Oriental languages, among which the student must take those in the language related to his or her personal area of research.
